Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) has the task of receiving and housing inmates that were convicted of felony crimes within the State of California. When an inmate arrives at a state prison, he/she is assigned a classification based on his/her committed offense. This classification is broken down into 4 levels: Level I, II, III, and IV. Level I being the lowest and Level IV being the highest. The lower the level of classification means the lower risk the inmate poses while the higher the Level, the higher risk the inmate poses. There are approximately 170,000 inmates currently housed in the state prison system.
